ADHD

Adults seek an attention assessment mainly because they cannot focus on work/study or face obstacles to progress in their careers or further studies. Outsides the work or college environment, adults with attention deficit, may have difficulties in their routine (e.g., always late or mixed up with appointments), their relationship with friends or family members, raising children, procrastination or road traffic accidents as they cannot focus on driving.

Attention deficit often goes unrecognized during childhood, especially for girls who are less hyperactive. Some professionals request that the clients bring their primary school report cards or insist on speaking to parents or family members. It may be inconvenient and subjected to recall bias as well as not focusing on the current attention deficit that affects the clients at this moment.

The current method to assess attention deficit is mainly based on interviews, filling questionnaires or lengthy paper and pencil tests.

The frontal lobe impairment and attention deficit

The frontal lobe is the most important part of the human brain because it is involved in executive function. Executive function includes paying attention, making decisions and problem-solving. The frontal lobe is involved in impulse control and emotion regulation.

Currently, there is no objective and cost-effective way to assess how the frontal lobe function besides questionnaires and paper/pencil assessments. There are undeniably difficulties associated with ADHD, and many people claim their ADHD was missed by their teachers or parents during childhood. People who receive a report on the function of attention feel that there is an objective report to explain their difficulty and that it is a positive way of explaining their problems to others. An understanding of frontal lobe function can also help steer a person to learn new ways to organize their lives and manage problems.
